Process to handover dam starts
The County Government of Murang’a has initiated transfer of the management of Maragua Dam to Murang’a Water and Sanitation Company (Muwasco) following a directive by President William Ruto last week.
The facility has been under the management of Murang’a South Water and Sanitation Company (Muswasco) since its completion two years ago.
However, there has been a tussle over the management of the 800,000-cubic metre dam between the two companies which could have caught the attention of the President.
During the commissioning of the project on Thursday, Ruto directed the governor to oversee the handing over process to Muwasco, which is under the county government.
Officials from the two companies held a meeting presided over by county CEC for water Mary Magochi where they agreed to conclude transfer of the management within two weeks.
Customer details and water supply infrastructure will now be under Muwasco that has been mandated to supply water to residents in Maragua.
Magochi said she expects this to be a smooth process and the company will distribute water to approximately 20,000 households.
She pointed out that water coverage at Maragua is below 30 percent and the company will have put efforts into increasing the connections to local homesteads.
“Water is a devolved function and the county is facilitating water providing companies to increase coverage,” she said.
Managing Director of Muswasco Mary Nyaga said her firm is ready to hand over the facility to Muwasco, saying her company had managed the dam for two years.
