‘We are working to mobilize, offer as much as we can to help’ – Raila speaks on flood situation
Azimio la Umoja - One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga has issued a statement assuring Kenyans of his efforts to help mitigate the effects of the ongoing floods wreaking havoc in different parts of the country.
In his statement, the opposition chief stated that the Azimio coalition has mobilized support which will be delivered to the affected soon. He particularly pinpointed that a section of leaders drawn from the coalition are currently holding fundraisers to help support flood victims.
"We wish to assure those affected that we are working to mobilize and offer as much as we can to help. Within our own networks, we have reached out to mobilize support which we shall shortly be delivering to the affected.
"A number of our leaders are holding fundraisers and we will do what we can to support their efforts. We are also encouraging our networks to feel free to contribute to the national relief efforts, particularly through the Red Cross or other accountable organizations that are providing assistance," Raila said.
Raila also extended his condolences to the families of the victims affected by the flood situation and expressed optimism over the ongoing rescue missions wishing success to those involved in the exercise.
"The destruction caused by the raging floods across the country is overwhelming, heartbreaking and unbelievable. Its impact will be far-reaching and long-lasting. Hundreds of thousands of fellow citizens across the country have suffered devastating losses and face enormous challenges in the weeks, months and even years ahead. We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those who are suffering as a result of this tragedy," the Azimio supremo said.
The former prime minister further appealed to the government to prioritise assistance to low-income people across the country when offering assistance.
He also asked the President William Ruto-led administration to streamline the communication channels with those responsible for the flood situation to enhance efficiency in service delivery.
"For the days ahead and as the rains continue, we ask the government to be proactive, clear the confusion being witnessed, end duplication and unnecessary competition within its ranks and create clarity over roles and responsibilities in the response and incident management system," Raila said.
"We are also calling on the government to perfect the communication channels with all
who have responsibilities in the unfolding situation to enable agencies and the two levels
of government deliver better, faster and efficient services," he added.
