The National Treasury has released money to the in National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha said.

Nakhumicha spoke as Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi claimed that a well organised cartel network was sabotaging healthcare sector.

Speaking at the Sabatia Eye Hospital in Vihiga at the weekend, the CS said Treasury had remitted funds to the cash-stricken parastatal in order to restore normalcy at various hospitals across the country.

“Facilities claims will be settled immediately, but I must reiterate that we will ensure prudence and accountability in this exercise,” Nakhumicha assured, as Mudavadi maintained that individuals who were in the insurance business were inciting private hospitals against taking in patients with NHIF cover.

The CS, however did not disclose how much had been released. Details with NHIF, however, shows the government owes it slightly over Sh20 billion.

“I wish to thank the National Treasury for remitting funds to NHIF in time to enable settlement of claims by various service providers nationwide,” Nakhumicha said.
