Dairy farmers using Ngorongo-Gatina road in Gatundu North, Kiambu County are now forced to use wheelbarrows to transport animal feeds after the road became impassable for use by vehicles.

The farmers, who this morning resolved to repair the deplorable road by digging trenches to create waterways, said since the onset of the rainy season, the stretch has been in pathetic condition with any type of vehicle being unable to ply through the area.

Irked by the fact that they have been agitating for repair of the road for years now, the locals joined hands to rehabilitate the stretch that was initially used by animal feeds vehicles to ferry materials for use by their domestic animals.

They decried that the road which is under the county was last murramed in 2014, pointing an accusing finger to the area Member of County Assembly (MCA).

Led by Simon Giteere Kariuki, a dairy farmer in the area, the locals lamented that even transportation of milk has become a daunting task as they are forced wake up earlier than before to transport the essential commodity to the dairies unlike before when milk was picked near their homes.

"This is the sad situation we are in and it's quite costly. Transporting animal feeds using wheelbarrows requires that you employ more workers and the risks are also higher. We are concerned because we have been complaining to our MCA but nothing comes out of our agitation," Gitere said.

"We know they come during the electioneering period to do small repairs to hoodwink us but we are now wiser and will know how to go about it next year but for now, development is our right and it should be served," Mugo Mwaniki, another local said.

Efforts to reach the area MCA for a comment were unproductive.
