Flash floods and sewer water menace continues to rock the populous Kitengela town to the chagrin of residents who fear the breakout of water borne diseases.

Clogged drainages occasioned by uncollected garbage has witnessed flash floods along feeder roads which have been reduced to swampy areas adversely affecting business and halting movement.

The Tarino-Tumaini tarmacking road stretch is among areas which turn impassable owing to heavy flash floods as the drainage along the stretch is totally clogged.

Uncollected garbage

“When it rains, we cannot open our shops because of flooded water. We are suffering losses and we even fear if the rains continue we will have to shut down business for unknown period of time. What hurts most is that county government officials show up but nothing is done. The water drainages have been blocked by uncollected garbage,” said Philip Asotsi, a resident.

On the other hand, rogue residents have been accused of discharging raw sewer water to roads and the clogged drainages further making the situation more hazardous.

Kitengela county administrator Bruce Likama says the sewer water menace is a serious crisis during this rainy season further saying apartments involved in the practice are being profiled.

Likama says the profiled apartments discharging sewer water at night and during the day taking advantage of the rains will be forcefully be closed down.

“We have notorious landlords who have failed to comply with proper sewer water disposal even after being issued with notices. We will now work hand in hand with all concerned stakeholders and issue tenants’ notices to vacate the apartments,” he said.
