Rudisha alleys fears as he escapes with minor injuries after accident
Multiple World and Olympic champion David Rudisha suffered minor injuries on Saturday night when his vehicle collided with a passenger bus heading to Nairobi from Nyamira County.
The two-lap race record holder and police issued varying statements for the accident which left Rudisha’s car written off. According to Keroka OCPD Walter Abondo, the accident occurred at 2am Sunday while the athlete said the accident happened at 10pm on Saturday.
Rudisha was on en route his rural home in Trans Mara when the collision occurred at Nyansiongo area along Kijauri-Keroka highway in Nyamira County. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to Keroka sub-county hospital where Xray photos showed no fractures.
The athlete is said to have complained of slight pain in his lower limbs and chest but was treated and discharged. Rudisha confirmed through his social media platforms that he was involved in the accident but said he was fine.
“I am well and unhurt from this morning’s accident. Thank you for your prayers and concern. And above all, I thank God for keeping everyone else involved safe. A special thank you to the other road users who rushed to the scene to help me out of the car after the accident,” wrote Rudisha.
Rudisha has been absent from the track since 2017 when he won a gold medal in the London IAAF World Championships. He was recently thrust into the limelight when his estranged wife called him out on social media for frustrating her and their children.
His public appearances have been limited to very few events with little or no explanation about his running career that now seems to be ebbing away. Lack of action for two years coupled with age and a host of younger, hungry and determined athletes could possibly spell the end to one of the greatest track running careers.
Rudisha disengaged from his erstwhile handler Brother Colm O’Connor in late 2017 and briefly worked with coach Bernard Ouma of Rongai Athletic Club before going underground.
With trials for Doha World Championships slated for early next month and the athlete having not competed anywhere or in any race, it would be safe to say Rudisha will not be defending his title.
