A deputy director in charge of political affairs at the Nakuru County Government has succumbed to coronavirus after battling the disease for more than three weeks in hospital.

Breaking the news yesterday, Governor Lee Kinyanjui said Wilfred Chebochok died while receiving treatment.

“This is a big blow to the County Executive Office where he discharged his duties with diligence and commitment,” he said.

Kinyanjui added: “His passion for excellence and team work was exemplary.

Our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the family at this difficult moment.”

Nakuru seems to have become the hotspot - again - for the third wave ofcCoronavirus going by the day-to-day data provided by the Health Executive Kariuki Gichuki in the last few days.

For instance, on March 13, the county reported 119 new cases from some 398 samples tested, which translates to 30 per cent positivity rate, accounting to 13 per cent of the national caseload on that particular day alone.

Cumulatively, Nakuru has confirmed a total of 5,103 cases accounting to 4.6 per cent of the cases reported nationally since the start of the pandemic.

Overall, the positivity rate in the county is 9.4 per cent, said Gichuki.
