Showdown looms at Afya House as embattled blood agency boss tries to access her office

A showdown looms at Afya House as Kenya National Blood Transfusion Services (KNBTS) director, Dr. Fridah Govedi tries to regain access to the office on the first floor of the building accompanied by police officers.

On Saturday at around mid-day goons allegedly under instruction "from powers that be" replaced the locks to her office in a protracted struggle between her and PS Susan Mochache to control KNBTS.

Mochache had in March redeployed Govedi to KNH in what she saw as a demotion, but largely influenced by the activities at the national blood agency.

Subsequently, PS Mochache appointed a lab technologist, Charles Rombo to the position as acting director, KNBTS.

On Saturday after Govedi's office was broken into, Rombo rushed to DCI and reported threats to his life.

The agency is on the spotlight as a host of a network of blood thieves siphoning the life-saving human product to sell abroad and in private health facilities.

Meanwhile, Govedi had sought Court protection her 'unilateral' reposition to KNH, and obtained orders reinstating her.
