Over 1.3 million youths who had been hoping to be recruited in the third phase of the Kazi Mtaani initiative will have to wait longer because of a lack of funds.

The government has issued a notice that it will not recruit the youths until Members of Parliament pass a Supplementary Budget for the exercise that was pencilled to have resumed in December 2021.
Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga urged the youth to be patient as efforts are being made for normalcy to return.

He expressed optimism that MPs will pass the budget now that Parliament has reconvened.
“On Kazi Mtaani, we are still awaiting a Supplementary Budget to be presented to Parliament. Now that MPs are back from recess we hope the process will be fast-tracked,” said Hinga.

Speaking in Nairobi at the weekend, the PS said the National Treasury had allocated Sh10 billion for the programme as directed by President Uhuru Kenyatta in October last year.

The third phase is said to be robust and will be implemented in over 900 informal settlements across all 47 counties.

During the last Mashujaa Day celebrations, President Uhuru promised that the National Hygiene Programme popularly known as the Kazi Mtaani would be continued because it had positively impacted the lives of hundreds of thousands of youths.
