Students in Busia county are reluctant to take loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to pursue their studies despite funds being available, an official has revealed.

HELB officer Bernard Tanui said out of 355 students who applied for the loans from the area, Bunyala Sub-county had the least number with only 17 while Funyula had 19 students.

He said Butula Sub-county had the highest number of students who applied for HELB loans standing at 92 followed by Matayos with 76 students.

Tanui spoke while presenting the quarterly reports on the status of Busia Revolving Fund, Afya Education loans and scholarships for 2019/20 financial year.

He said area students would be educated on the importance of taking (HELB) loans to enable them to pursue their studies effectively.
