Swashbuckling Gor now aim for 20th crown
When the 2020/2021 BetKing Premier League kicks off 10 days from now, defending champions Gor Mahia will be angling to bag an unprecedented 20th title.
Unlike during the last few transfer seasons when K’Ogalo made marquee signings, the team lured into their ranks relatively unknown players this time round and it remains to be seen what is up their sleeves in the league front, the CAF Champions League and the 2021 Cecafa club championships.
Although the Covid-19 pandemic has ravaged the country since its onset in March, it came as music to the years of the Green Army who were declared champions by Football Kenya Federation.
Gor were crowned champions with 54 points and with 11 matches to spare, leaving Kakamega Homeboyz and Tusker to settle for the second and third places with 47 points and 46 points respectively.
Despite losing mercurial Rwandese pair of Jacques Tuyisenge and Meddie Kagere in the 2019 season, Gor found marksmen like Boniface Omondi, Kenneth Muguna and Nicholas Kipkirui who fitted in their shoes.
Save for Omondi who has joined Wazito, Muguna and Kipkirui are still with the team and their efforts are expected to be supplemented by the presence of new faces including prodigy Benson Omala who was signed from Western Stima and ex-Rwanda’s Rayon Sport scoring machine Jules Ulimwengu.
Another key player to have left Gor is midfielder Lawrence Juma who decamped to Sofapaka
Gor open their league title defense with a pressure cooker encounter against Tusker and it would be interesting to watch what some of these players have to offer the multiple league champions.
