Teacher colleges told to prepare for diploma courses
Teachers Training Colleges (TTCs) have been directed to start preparations to offer Diploma in Primary Education course beginning September next year.
Education PS Belio Kipsang said TTCs are expected to prepare on teaching capacity and infrastructure.
The ministry has halted the intake for pre-primary and P1 teacher training.
Kipsang also said the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development is developing the teacher education curriculum.
“The ministry has decided that there will be no intake for pre-primary and P1 teacher training this year.
Bring this to the attention of all principals of both public and private teacher training colleges in your regions,” said Kipsang, in a circular to Regional and County Directors of Education.
He said implementation of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) will have an implication on pre-service teacher training. Teachers will be expected to teach the new curriculum in pre-primary schools.
The ministry says the decision to phase out P1 is geared towards graduating teachers who are better equipped to deliver CBC.
The government has assured in-service teachers’ training will continue during holidays towards delivering the new curriculum.
At least 91,000 teachers were trained in April. Another cohort of 114,000 was trained in August, which mainly focused on preparing teachers for the rollout of CBC in Grade Four next year.
Education Cabinet secretary George Magoha has assured a clear master plan for rolling out Grade Four will be in place by the end of this month.
