Teachers Service C*mmission: Sossion no longer teacher as from July 29
The Teachers Service Commission has issued a notice to remove Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) secretary general Wilson Sossion from the register of teachers effective July 29.
The teachers employer said Sossion breached provisions of TSC Act 2012 and Code of Regulations for teachers when he caused paralysis of Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) training in April at 11 centres—Kakamega, Bungoma, Kajiado, Kitui, Machakos, Garissa, Siaya, Kisii, Nyamira, Vihiga and Kwale.
But Sossion immediately dismissed the move as inconsequential and told TSC the deregistration will not affect the union’s operations.
“The deregistration changes nothing,” said Sossion, citing Article 34 (A) of the Labour Relations Act. He said the termination of his contract did not affect his rights as a union official.
Legitimate position
On Monday, Central Organisation of Trade Union (Cotu) had also rallied behind Sossion and told TSC to stop intimidating and threatening Sossion.
“We wish to acknowledge that Sossion holds a legitimate position in the leadership of Knut. Equally, the ruling does not in any way affect his position,” said Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli.
But yesterday, TSC also accused Sossion of breaching provisions of the law in that he did not act with impartiality, honesty and objectivity when he accepted nomination of ODM as a MP in 2017.
In a notice dated July 29 and signed by Mary Rotich for TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia, TSC said Sossion has a right of review against the decision which must be exercised within 90 days of the date of the notice.
