Traffic disruption: Motorists using Uhuru Highway will be forced to put up with lengthy hours on the road after Kenya Highway Authority (KENHA) announced a 21 day extended closure of the road.

The closure which begins tomorrow on Friday, 30 April will spill over till May 20 due to the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway.

“There will be traffic disruption along Liberty Highway from Friday, April 30, 2021, to Thursday, May 20. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause as we strive to provide a secure, secure and reliable network,” Kenha Director-General Peter Mundinia revealed in an April 29 statement.

Friday's closure of Uhuru Highway is an extension of an ealier shutdown that begun on April 9.

From April 30 you'll have to drive through Bunyala Road-Workshop Road and Lusaka if you are leaving the CBD and join Mombasa road at Nyayo roundabout.

Two weeks ago, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Machariah urged motorists to be patient, stating that the traffic snarl ups they were caught up in along Mombasa Road would be there just for a short while.

"I understand there are a lot of inconveniences as people are spending longer hours in traffic but the reason we are constructing the Nairobi Expressway is to solve the traffic jam that was there before," Machariah stated.

The CS further claimed that the existing traffic snarl ups were part of the inconveniences of clearing pre-existing traffic on Mombasa Road.

"If there was no traffic congestion before there would be no justification to construct the highway. This pain we are having now is very short-term pain," Macharia added.

The construction of the Nairobi Expressway has created traffic snarl ups along Uhuru Highway, Mombasa Road and Waiyaki Way forcing motorists to use either South B, Industrial Area or Outering Road as alternative routes.
