Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) secretary general Wilson Sossion has officially been de-registered as a teacher.

This is after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) published Sossion's deregistration in the Kenya gazette Friday, citing the date of removal as October 29, 2019.

In the notice, TSC chief executive Nancy Macharia said Sossion cannot engage in teaching in any Kenyan school under the law.

“Pursuant to section 30 of the TSC Act, the Teachers Service Commission has removed the name of the individual named herein from the register of teachers,” read the notice.

But in a rejoinder, Knut termed the notice  illegal since the matter is active in court.

“There should not be panic over the gazetted notice by TSC to deregister Sossion. The notice is illegal as the matter is active in court. It is also discriminative as there are many other union leaders who are serving as Members of Parliament,” Knut posted on its Twitter account.

TSC issued a notice to remove Sossion from the register of teachers effective July 29. The Commission accused the SG of breaching provisions of TSC Act 2012 and Code of Regulations for teachers when he caused paralysis of Competence Based Curriculum (CBC) training in April at 11 centres namely Kakamega, Bungoma, Kajiado, Kitui, Machakos, Garissa, Siaya, Kisii, Nyamira, Vihiga and Kwale.

Sossion was also accused of breaching provisions of the law in that he did not act with impartially, honesty and objectivity regardless of his political views when he accepted the nomination of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) as a Member of Parliament in 2017.

In a notice dated July 29, the commission said Sossion had a right of review against the decision which must be exercised within 90 days of the date of the notice.

TSC drew Sossion's attention to Section 31(2) of the Act, which provides that an application for reinstatement to the register of teachers will only be considered by the commission after 18 months from the date of removal.

If upon expiry of 90 days from the date of notice and no application will have been made or if it is withdrawn or dismissed, TSC told Sossion that his name will be removed from register of teachers, forthwith.
