You’ll be arrested, alcohol addicts drinking sanitisers warned

Murang’a leaders have warned of stern action against alcohol addicts said to be taking sanitisers to quench their urge.

A number of youths have confessed to taking the alcohol-based sanitisers distributed by the government in the fight against coronavirus because they can’t access cheap liquor since bars are closed.

They claim since they are not able to access alcohol, the sanitisers have come in handy.

“I take two or three sips and I get the relief. I am able to sleep well without nightmares,” said one man, who sought anonymity.

“I don’t care if the sanitiser will cause any harm as long as it has alcohol content, it serves the purpose for now,” he added, oblivious of the health risk involved.

Many alcohol addicts are unable to accomplish any task without taking the commodity.

And yesterday, Mathioya MP Peter Kimari said they are working with security agencies to tame the trend.

“These people need to understand this liquid could be hazardous if consumed,” he said.

“We are working with the security agents to get to the root of this matter.”

Area Assistant Commissioner Kipchumba Ruto said anyone who will be caught drinking sanitiser will be arrested and prosecuted for abusing the substance.
