CAVB Zone five Beach Volleyball Qualifiers commence in Mombasa

Kenya is set to host the 2023 African Volleyball Federation (CAVB ) Zone five Beach Volleyball Qualifiers at the Pride Inn Paradise Beach Resort in Mombasa from today to Sunday.

Speaking yesterday in Mombasa town, Local Organizing Committee ( LOC) Chairman and Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Deputy President Paul Bitok confirmed that Kenya will battle it out against Rwanda, a side he previously coached.

The other teams to face the hosts are Burundi, Egypt and Uganda as they will be seeking the top three honors of the 2024 CAVB Continental Cup that will be used to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

“ The Paris 2024 Olympics have only a single slot for Africa, meaning that from here the top three countries will qualify for the continental cup and then battle it out for the Olympics,” said Bitok.


Kenya Beach Volleyball Commission Chairperson Moses Mbuthia expressed confidence that the country will qualify both the men’s and women’s team for the Olympics, but warned against laxity adding that Kenyans should take advantage of playing at home.


“ They have been in camp for two weeks and a final squad has been selected. We already have experienced players like Glaudencia Makokha who’s an olympian and I believe will guide the team well,” said a confident Mbuthia.


The women’s national team’s Coach Salome Wanjala dropped Mariam Musa and Pamela Jepkirui and settled for Olympian Gaudencia Makokha to guide Yvonne Wavinya and rookies  Mercy Iminza and Sharleen Sembel.


Patrick Owino who will be on the bench coaching the men’s national team picked veteran setter Brian Melly to partner Edward Kibet, Elphas Makuto and Jairus Bett, dropping Donald Mchete and Wilson Cheruiyot for this particular assignment.
