Excitement as school games return
The wait is over. After more than two years of lack of competitive sports in local schools, action returns at almost all the regions in the country from today, with participants seeking to make statements and book tickets to the next level of the campaigns.
In Nairobi, Lenana High School will be hosting the ball games for the next two days where county giants Kamkunji, Starehe, Upper Hill, reigning champions Dagoretti and the hosts, expected to rub shoulders for top honours.
Other venues for the games which will also include handball, basketball, netball and volleyball, will be Upper Hill, Dagoretti High, Don Bosco and State House Girls.
“We are all exited that the schools games are back and we expect to witness a lot of talent. The rules remain the same and there will be fines for lateness,” Moses Mbuthia, the Nairobi Region Secondary School Sports Association Secretary General.
He added: “Any appeals should be done within 30 minutes. All team managers and coaches must ensure that their players are disciplined on an off the pitch at all times and teams that are not accompanied by a teacher will not be allowed to play.”
In the boys basketball, former boys basketball giants Aquinas High School are expected to battloes it out against the likes of Lenana, Nairobi School, Hospital Hill, Highway Secondary, Jamuhuri High and Pumwani Boys among others.
Meanwhile, Narok Boys High School in Narok North sub county will host the Narok County Secondary Schools term two ‘B’ games which is slated for Friday.
Narok County Secondary School Sport Association Vice Secretary Jacob Barusei, all is set for the two-day event and will involve seven sub counties including new Transmara South.
“We are in the final process of the preparations and we expect the teams to arrive today evening before the start of the championship today morning,” said Barusei.
Narok North Sub County Secondary Sports Association Secretary Patrick Kiprono said the disciplines to be featured include football, volleyball, basketball, hockey , netball, rugby swimming and racquet games in both boys and girls categories.
He also said that all the competition would be played at Maasai girls and Narok Boys High school.
Narok West Sub County secondary school sports association chairman Parmale Kuluo said the referees and umpires appointed to handle various games will perform their duties diligently and impartially without fear or favour adding that they cannot condone poor officiating.
He noted that they expect all the players to maintain discipline all the time they are in the competition.
“The students should take the tournament with much seriousness and showcase their talents in sports among other development issues in order to achieve something from it,” said Kuluo, who is also Pimbinet Secondary School Principal.
At the same time, former National Schools Boys’ Hockey champions Narok Boys High school are expected to extend supremacy in the game.
Their quest to advance to the next level will be determined by the way they handle their bitter rivals Ololulunga Boys High School in the finals.
School Principal David Kirui, who is Narok County School Heads Association Vice chairman, expressed optimism that his team will perform better in the championships despite a tight schedule of recovering time lost due Covid-19 period.
