Nyanchwa surmount rivals Kisii

For the third consecutive year, flawless Nyanchwa Boys’ basketball team retained the Kisii County Secondary Schools Sports Association (KCSSSA) basketball boys’ title. 

On Saturday at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho, Nyanchwa defeated their fierce rivals Kisii School 66-47 to lift the trophy for the third time, in what was a repeat of last year’s finals, where Nyanchwa reaped a basket point victory over Kisii School.

When they met this year in the sub-county finals, Kisii School emerged top, and Nyanchwa did not want a repeat of the same and immediately the match threw off, they meant business from the word go to post an early 10-1 lead in the first quarter before Kisii fought back but Nyanchwa held on to record a 15-12 score by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Nyanchwa outscored Kisii posting a dominant 21-7 score to take a healthy and cumulative 36-19 lead at halftime.

Half-way through the third quarter, Kisii School tried to push hard searching for a tie of the game or even take a brief lead, but well oiled-up Nyanchwa upped the ante to score 14 points of the quarter against Kisii’s seven and held on to a comfortable 50-26 lead as the two teams entered the final quarter.

Kisii upped its defence in the fourth quarter, which forced several Nyanchwa turnovers, and they took their first double - digit lead in the quarter (21-16) trying to mount a comeback, but they could not over take the defending champions who held on to win the match 66-47.

In the girls’ teams, unstoppable Itiero Girls once again proved unmatched as they beat close challengers Sengera Girls 62-32 to retain the title for the eighth time.

As the two basketball champs retained their county titles, all other disciplines witnessed emergency of new champions with Nduru Boys taking the lion’s share, winning three titles in handball boys, hockey boys and rugby 15s with Ombera Girls emerging champions in handball girls, Amaiko Girls in hockey girls as Saphinnah Kenyando’s led Nyabigena Boys side reclaimed rugby 7s title after beating hosts Cardinal Otunga 31-0 in the finals.
