More than 500 athletes are gearing up for the 9th edition of the Chemususu Half Marathon, set to take place on November 11 in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County.

The event has seen a significant surge in registrations from both up-and-coming and elite athletes.
Race director Matthew Birir expressed his enthusiasm, noting the substantial number of registrations and anticipating an intensely competitive race, consistent with the event’s history.

Birir, the former Olympic Games 3,000m steeplechase champion, highlighted the participation of top corporations and athletes in various activities before the marathon.

“We are anticipating a big number of athletes between 500 and 1,000 because this is the best half marathon race so far in the country,” stated Birir, who also secured the world junior 3,000m steeplechase title. He emphasized the event’s focus on not just running but also the conservation of the Chemususu Dam, along with other societal engagements.

“We shall start our activities by sensitizing the locals on agribusiness because we need athletes to eat well before running, free medical camp and distribution of sanitary towels as a way of creating awareness to the community to conserve the forest as well as the dam,” added Birir.

Furthermore, he announced that last year’s top three athletes, led by Emmanuel Kemboi and Daisy Cherotich, have been granted a wild card entry to compete in this year’s event.

“As race organizers, it’s a great honour to extend this offer to our champions, allowing them to register for free. This gesture is to motivate them to return and defend their titles,” explained Birir.

Birir emphasized the continuous growth of the marathon, with several sponsors supporting the event to ensure an optimal training and running environment for the athletes.
