Nick Mwendwa claims CS Amina wants her ousted from office
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has openly claimed the Ministry of Sports, through Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed, want him and his team ousted from office illegally.
According to Mwendwa, insists the accusations and investigations by the Sports CS only came after Kenya suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat against Mali in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture.
"So we lost to Mali and someone sits somewhere and decides to punish us. So some people came for six hours, looked through our books for the past six years and are now writing a report, "Mwendwa said.
The embattled federation’s boss further explained his bitterness at the decision to have their accounts investigated, insisting he and the FKF have done nothing wrong.
"This course is sponsored by Fifa. Not the government. Fifa audits us every year and has no problem with how we spend our monies. I've worked with three ministers and none have had an issue with the federation," Mwendwa said.
The relationship between the federation and the Ministry of Sports has deteriorated since Sports CS Amina ordered the Sports Registrar to investigate the FKF's accounts over alleged misappropriation of funds.
Amina recently ordered the Sports Registrar Rose Wasike to conduct an audit of FKF amid claims of misappropriation of funds by the football body.
CS Amina’s directive came at a time Mwendwa was under immense pressure from football stakeholders, following Kenya’s embarrassing loss to Mali a month ago in World Cup qualifiers. (6-0 aggregate).
Prior to the directive by CS Amina, Mwendwa had lost a case in the High Court, where he had sought to stop the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) from arresting him over alleged misappropriation of funds.
Mwendwa lost his bid to block the Directorate of Public Prosecutions and Directorate of Criminal Investigations from probing and arresting him for the misappropriation of the federation funds.
According to multiple sources, the government is concerned about the suspected misappropriation of over KSh 10 million, which Amina has since asked the sports registrar to audit and give a report.
Auditor General’s report for 2018/19 had flagged KSh11 million paid to Mwendwa without proper documentation.
The Inspection committee was due to hand their findings to Amina on Monday.
Mwendwa is currently serving his second four-year term in office after he was overwhelmingly elected by football delegates in Nairobi last year.
