Road to Gleneagles – Johnnie Walker Classic returns
Kenya Breweries Limited has announced the return of the Johnnie Walker Classic golf series.
The series dubbed “Road to Gleneagles” will traverse 20 golf clubs across the country culminating in the grand finale in May. The tournament will take a four-ball stableford format with the top three teams at every event qualifying to play in the latter stages of the tournament where the overall winning team will win an all-paid trip to the iconic Gleneagles Golf Course in Scotland.
The series has 18 qualification rounds across participating clubs where 216 golfers will qualify to play in the latter stages of the event. This will will then be followed by a semi-final round (Eagle Round) to reduce the field to the top 25 teams - or 100 players - who will get to play at the grand finale for the coveted prize said to be Sh500,000.The tournament is also expected to attract amateur players who will clash with their professional counterparts.
The professionals invited will have the luxury of being provided the requisite exposure and improved competitiveness in the lead up to the main European Tour events - the Magical Kenya Open and the Kenya Savannah Classic.
Speaking during the launch of the series at the Vet Lab Sports Club, which will host the opening round of the series on November 20, KBL Head of Luxury Brands Nicholas Mutinda stated: “Through the series, we aim to continue our commitment towards supporting the growth and development of golf in the country. As KBL, we believe in sports as a powerful avenue to interact with our customers of our various brands and therefore this will be a great platform for us to interact with consumers of the Johnie Walker brand.”
“We shall also seek to use this competition to promote golf tourism in the country to ensure we steer it to the next level.”
Vet Lab Sports Club Captain George Kingori on his part stated : “We are delighted that this tournament is back,and it is a great opportunity for golfers around the country to compete for such a coveted prize. I thank KBL for organising this competition which will go a long way in promoting the sport of golf in the country,”he said.
Also present at the event was the Kenya Golfers Union Chairman Peter Kiguru and Professional Golfers of Kenya Captain CJ Wangai.
