Rugby returns
The decision whether or not to scrap Charity Cup, the Kenya Cup league curtain raiser, pitting KCB and Kabras will keep rugby fans on the edge as they await confirmation from the KRU fixtures committee.
This is after the People Sport learnt of an appeal by KCB against the match.
The curtain raiser that normally features Kenya Cup champions versus Enterprise Cup holders was highly anticipated with fans eager to see if Kabras, who were on course to winning the league before coronavirus interrupted it, can get their first win over KCB.
KCB team manager Philip Wamae disclosed that the club had raised concerns about the match against Kabras.
“We aired our sentiments on that match to the league fixtures committee as we do our best to ensure our team is ready. We all want to return to play as we figure out how the game will be upheld in the near future,” said Wamae.
It had been reported that Kabras players were actively in session awaiting the confirmation of the match, but club chairman Philip Jalango has refuted this, saying only individual players were in training and conditioning programmes.
Following clearance from the Ministry of Sport, Culture and Heritage, the 2021 Kenya Cup season will kick off on Saturday 27 February 2021 and will run for 11 match days with the top four teams qualifying for the semi finals on Saturday 22 May.
The winners of the semi final encounters will play in the Kenya Cup final on Saturday 29 May.
The season will first be preceded by the Kenya Cup qualifiers involving the top six teams from the 2019/20 KRU Championship. These qualifiers will be played on Saturday 6 February and Saturday 13 February respectively.
This will then pave way for a league curtain raiser pitting the current holders of the Kenya Cup against the current Enterprise Cup champions. This encounter will be played on Saturday 20 February.
All fixtures will be played in adherence to existing Covid-19 protocols with no spectators in attendance.
