Shujaa to play in SA Rugby 10-day camp
Kenya rugby sevens national team will play hosts South Africa, Uganda and Zimbabwe at Stellenbosch in a four-team Solidarity Camp hosted by Rugby Africa between May 6 and 16.
The Solidarity Camp will offer the four teams a platform to prepare for the Tokyo Olympics.
Playing against already qualified Shujaa and the Springboks, Uganda Cranes and the Zimbabwe Cheetahs will be looking forward to earning crucial exposure and experience ahead of their final Olympics qualifier, the repechage tournament, that will award the winner a final slot in the Olympics games.
As the four African nations plan to hold a camp, England, Scotland and Wales formed the Great Britain merger.
Being an Olympic year, the three have handed back two slots in the HSBC series that need filling before the men’s series kicks off on October 29-30 in Singapore.
Uganda and Zimbabwe will be obvious contenders for the two slots as Japan is set to play as a core team this season.
In collaboration with the South African Rugby Union, Rugby Africa is keen to assist the four African Unions prepare their men’s national teams to prepare for the busy 2021 rugby calendar.
Shujaa team manager Eric Ogweno is grateful to the National Olympic Committee of Kenya and the Ministry of Sports for hosting Shujaa in camp during a time when reports of the third Covid-19 wave made headlines.
The first camp at Kasarani closes today with second one starting from April 17 for two weeks before the team travels to South Africa for a camp-cum-tournament.
