Spot- on Shujaa rock Spain in Vancouver Sevens opener

Willy Ambaka and Alvin Otieno were on target for Kenya in the first half to ensure Shujaa sealed a comfortable 17-5 win over Spain in the opening match of HSBC seven series in Vancouver, Canada.

Otieno sliced through the Spain defence to score the first try of the evening, as Mwamba RFC fly half Daniel Taabu failed to convert for a 5-0 lead.

Russia based Ambaka bulldozed the Russia defence to score the much-needed try heading to the intervals for a 10-0 lead, with Taabu missing the extras.

Andres Arnau scored the consolation try soon after the restart, but missed the extras for a 10-5 score line heading to the intervals.

Shujaa would go on to score the final try through Menengai Oilers flanker Harold Anduvate to seal their victory with a comfortable win for the Innocent Simiyu charges. 17-5, the final score after Taabu slotted in the conversion.

Shujaa are in Canada for the HSBC series opener in Vancouver, Canada and will play Mexico in their second match of the day before taking on South Africa in their final game of the pool stage.

Nelson Oyoo captains Shujaa squad to the opening leg of the 2021 HSBC Sevens World Series in a squad that has five debutants.

Shujaa are in Pool A which sees South Africa, who finished as 2020 Series runners-up after reaching the podium in four of the six events, drawn with Series core teams Kenya and Spain and invitational team Mexico.

Kenya will seek to finish the day on a high note, awaiting tomorrow’s quarter-finals seeding.
