Strathmore and United States International University Africa (USIU-A) eked crucial points from strong opponents in the Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) men’s and women’s premier leagues over the weekend. They now hold on to crucial log positions away from the relegation zone.

In the men’s premier league, both USIU-A men’s side and Strathmore University won their respective fixtures to secure sixth and seventh places respectively as Green Sharks woes continued to leave them perched 8th which is just a place above the relegation cut currently held by Parkroad and Mombasa Sports Club.

Strathmore Gladiators’ most valuable player was Keith Alusa after his brace that sparked a comeback to upset fifth-placed Sailors 2-1.

Opening goal

Abraham Musee had given the Sailors the opening goal through a penalty in the 34th minute but that did not shut Meshack Senge’e coached Gladiators who were on fire in the last quarter to level the scores and score the decisive goal.

USIU-A men’s side on the other hand overcame Green Sharks by a solitary goal struck by Lawrence Makhatsa through a penalty corner after 45 minutes of play. Sharks’ loss left them in a desperate position sitting just a place above the relegation zone.

In the women’s premier league action, USIU-A ladies had a realistic chance of netting six points in two matches but they instead settled on four points owing to a win and a stalemate.

The women’s premier league log remained unchanged as USIUA-A ladies remained fourth with 14 points after their weekend’s campaign that got them to bully relegation-marked Sliders by two unanswered goals before Sailors, also surfing on the danger zone forced them to settle for a point each courtesy of a 0-0 draw on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the race to promotion to the men’s premier league flamed up after the men’s super league table toppers Sikh Union was held to a 1-1 stalemate by second-placed KCA-U.
