ELDORET: Veteran athletes in Kisii County have appealed to the County government to set up Sports Academies and Training camps in the county to aid youths in exploiting their talents in various sporting activities.

Led by Julius Gwako, the athletes said the county has thousands of talented children whose talents go to waste due to lack of training and support to exploit them.

He said the county has produced several gold and silver medalists in various athletic events over the years, stressing they can mentor more children to excel in athletics and restore the area’s lost glory.

“We want to partner with games teachers in various primary and secondary schools so that we can start nurturing children’s talents at a tender age for them to achieve their potentials,” Gwako said.

Gwako, a former champion in 5,000m, 10,000m and 21km races appealed to the county government to involve the veterans in mentoring and training children and link them to sponsors globally.

The 2004 Vancouver half marathon winner also appealed to parents to support their children to exploit their talents.

“It is better for the parents and guardians to support the education and talents of the children to help them exploit their potential” Gwako told the People Daily. He implored Governor Simba Arati to ensure that only professionals in various sporting activities are involved in training of the sports men and women.
