Vihiga Queens are the 2021/22 Kenya Women Premier League (WPL) Champions elect, just waiting for the official confirmation and conferment of the crown, handing coach Boniface Nyamunyamu the first league title of his career.

The Legacy Makers as the team is famously referred to, entered Saturday’s meeting with Zetech Sparks at Mumias Sports Complex needing three points to ensure that they could no longer be caught by their closest opponents Ulinzi Starlets, Gaspo Women, or outgoing champions Thika Queens at the top of the table, and that’s exactly what they got.

Attacking prowess of Janet Bundi, Topister Stima as her name suggests, she was once top as she netted a brace Topister Situma with Immah Wangira adding the other, for the 3-1 victory. Captain Puren Alukwe scored for Zetech Sparks.

The title victory sees Vihiga reclaim their spot at the top of the Kenyan women’s football mountain, having watched their run of three consecutive titles surprisingly ended by Thika Queens last season.

It’s a major moment for Kenya Women’s football as Vihiga has represented the country in the regional championship and emerged champions after winning the first-ever CAF Women Champions League Qualifiers-CECAFA Region Champions, Club Championship.

The Vihiga-based side is now the most successful in top-flight history, tallying a record of four league titles in five seasons according to recent league records, followed by Thika Queens (two titles in 2016, and 2021).
