Facilitators and trainers hired by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to train Deputy Returning Officers and Clerks in Nyamira County were on Sunday night attacked and seriously injured by armed gangs at a hotel in Nyamira town.

The four officers and a watchman guarding the guest house are being treated at the Nyamira County Referral Hospital.

Also injured during the raid were two clients and one worker of the guest house. They too are admitted to the same hospital.

Guest house’s manager James Ombogo said the gangsters wore police uniform and were armed with guns and other crude weapons.

“They broke into their rooms, beat them and robbed them of their personal effects,” Ombogo said.

Nyamira county IEBC returning officer Anthony Njoroge confirmed that the four had been hired to train its officials in readiness for next month’s election.
