Political lobby groups now want the recruitment of new members of the electoral commission stopped and the process done as per the recommendations of the Kriegler report.

Speaking yesterday, Political Parties Liaison Committee (PPLC) warned that the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) selection panel may end up getting the wrong individuals for the job at such a time when the country is experiencing political tensions.

“At the centre of the crisis is the reconstitution of IEBC. PPLC calls upon patriotic Kenyans to interrogate the Kriegler report and its various recommendations on our elections. Justice Kriegler warned us against appointing IEBC commissioners at the last minute. This last-minute culture has the potential of having rookie commissioners grope their way through elections,” said PPLC Chairperson Evans Misati.

Electoral process

The Kriegler report specifically examines the integrity of the whole electoral process, from voter registration and nomination of candidates through voting, counting, transmission, and tallying to dispute resolution and post-election procedures.

Misati said actions of having the recruitment panel continue with their work without dialogue will have far-reaching ramifications for the country.

“The current bipartisan engagement runs the risk of reducing the process to a political tussle between a small section of the political class. Other well-meaning Kenyans too have the right to be heard. They deserve a place at the table,” said Misati.

The concerns are even as both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio coalitions are engaged in war of words over the hiring of new commissioners.

On one hand, Azimio has warned of a crisis if Kenya Kwanza will proceed with the process without involving them.
