Raila bags 23 per cent of votes cast in Uhuru’s Gatundu South backyard
Tallying of the presidential results gathered pace on Friday as the electoral body rushes against time to beat the Tuesday deadline for declaring the outcome of the poll.
In the latest verified results announced by Independent Electoral Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati, Kenya Kwanza presidential flag bearer William Ruto is leading in the Central region.
Ruto scooped 76 per cent of the votes cast in Gatundu South Constituency, the backyard of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party candidate garnered 41, 712 votes, followed by his main rival Raila Odinga of the Azimio One Kenya coalition who got 12, 290 (23%) votes.
In his last days in office, Uhuru launched an aggressive campaign against his deputy (Ruto) while drumming up support for Raila in the Central region.
Other candidates
Roots party's candidate George Wajackoyah and David Mwaure Waihiga of Agano party got 311 and 223 votes respectively in Gatundu South.
