Stakeholders told to verify results at polling stations

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) yesterday sought to assure the country that it would conduct free, fair, transparent and credible elections next week.

While praying for a peaceful election, IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati asked various stakeholders not to waste time going to Bomas of Kenya, the National Tallying Centre, to look for results.

“The elections and results of those elections are at the polling station. Do not come to Bomas to look for results. They are not here. Here we only confirm what is from the polling station,” Chebukati stated.

 While exuding confidence in his commission and Secretariat, Chebukati disclosed that the team is in the process of fixing a few logistical issues and training poll officials.

During the meeting with multi-stakeholders by the Women Mediators Network Kenya and National Mediation Peace Team, Chebukati asked them to pray for IEBC commissioners, staff and those who he accused of profiling them negatively along tribal and ethnic lines.

He at the same time noted that although the agency has an enormous task ahead, it is focused on delivering credible elections.

In a joint statement by WMN-K and NMPT, Anglican Archbishop Dr Jackson ole Sapit urged Kenyans to vote peacefully. 

“We remind every Kenyan that we each have a sacred responsibility and duty to safeguard this country for our own sake. After all, elections come and go. Our country will remain,” Ole Sapit said.

“We have no doubt that Kenyans will safeguard peace for ourselves and for our children.  This is the reason we are calling on all Kenyans to re-commit to peace. The time to make that decision is now not tomorrow.  We remind ourselves that ‘Peace begins with us.”

He however, acknowledged that the country has had a fair share of problems, including those occasioned by Covid-19, drought and locust invasion that has left the people with very little or no food among other challenges. 

“Despite these and other challenges, Kenyans have continued to cope and have demonstrated amazing resilience, optimism. These are the blessings we are inviting Kenyans to celebrate and preserve.”
