Public consultations for the resettlement plans to pave the way for the construction of the Sh85 billion Mombasa Gate Bridge has started.

Repcon Associates team leader Edwin Obadha said Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has prepared an updated resettlement plan which is ready for disclosure in line with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) requirements.

Repcon is an environmental consultancy firm hired to oversee the process to help fast-track the 1.4-kilometre iconic bridge that will replace the Likoni ferry and the floating bridge and also eliminate the spectre of accidents that continue to hang at the Mombasa island’s key crossing point.

Disclosure meeting

“The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to invite you to come to the public disclosure meeting scheduled for Monday, March 14, 2022, at the Railways chief’s office compound, Mombasa, to discuss the outcome and findings of the Repcon’s study,” Repcon said.

The much-awaited construction of the bridge – connecting Mombasa Island to the South Coast – was expected to begin after the public consultation process as the government seeks to replace the ferry service that began operations in 1937 and the recently-opened Liwatoni Floating Bridge. According to Kenya Transport Association (KTA) all buildings in Ganjoni, aligned on the 1st row & the left-hand side of Bishop Makarios road (sacred heart high school side), from the Mombasa sports club roundabout to where this road joins moi avenue, will be acquired by the state and demolished.
