Former Kibaki PA Geoffrey King’ang’i bows out of parliamentary race after losing UDA ticket
The late former President Mwai Kibaki's Aide-de-Camp (ADC) Geoffrey King’ang'i Muturi who is also the current MP for Mbeere South has dropped out of the parliamentary contest.
King'ang'i announced the move on Monday, April 25, 2022, at the Parliament buildings during the public viewing of Kibaki's body which is lying in state.
"There have been a lot of things in my constituency (Mbeere South) and my people know. I have decided that I will not defend my seat. I will look for another opportunity to serve this nation, and not be an MP again," he said.
King'ang'i left public service as Kibaki's aide in 2012 to contest for the Mbeere South parliamentary seat where he lost to Mutava Musyimi.
He later clinched the seat in 2017 after flooring Musyimi and other contestants. King'ang'i, who was seeking to defend his seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket lost during the primaries after getting 1,570 votes against 5,650 and 5,564 for Genesio Mugo and Nebat Muriuki respectively.
King’ang’i refuted the results claiming there were massive cases of irregularities ranging from rigging and ballot stuffing, late arrival of ballot materials at polling stations and no turnout in some stations.
It was expected that he would defend his seat as an independent candidate, but the legislator has opted out.
