Govt mulling over change of venue for Madaraka Day celebrations in Kisumu
The planned venue for hosting this year's Madaraka day celebrations in Kisumu might be changed from the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium in Mamboleo to State Lodge over Covid-19 fears.
In a last-minute dash to respond to the worrying Covid-19 situation in Kisumu, senior government officials convened an urgent meeting to discuss details of a new venue.
While addressing the media on Saturday, the state House spokesperson Kanze Dena said talks are ongoing between the Ministry of Health, Kisumu County Commissioner and Governor Anyang Nyong'o to decide the location and that by evening the venue will be communicated.
"Due to the spike of Covid-19 cases in Kisumu talks are ongoing and by evening we will communicate the venue and share with all media houses,” she said.
She also informed the media that President Uhuru Kenyatta will tomorrow arrive in the Lake side city for a three-day state visit.
The head of state will also be accompanied by the First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.
In his visit, Uhuru will officially launch the Kisumu port and the Uhuru business market which was constructed to accommodate traders who were displaced from Kibuye market to pave way for it to be built to an ultra-modern market.
Also joining him in the tour will be several National and Regional leaders among them Opposition Leader Raila Odinga, Kisumu Governor Prof Anyang' Nyong'o among others.
The President of the Republic of Burundi His Excellency President Evariste Ndayishimiye will also arrive in Kisumu City on Monday, 31st May 2021 to start of his two-day State Visit to the Republic of Kenya and will join President Kenyatta during his tour of the various National Government Projects in Nyanza Region.
