IEBC to kick off diaspora voter registration exercise
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced its plans to start a voter registration exercise for Kenyans living in the diaspora.
In a press release, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukali said that the Commission is planning to start the registration exercise on November 6, 2021, and the exercise will run for fifteen days.
Chebukati the Commission will soon announce centres and countries in which Kenyans in the diaspora can register as voters.
"The Commission plans to commence the voter registration for citizens residing outside on Monday, December 6, 2021, for a period of fifteen days. The exercise will be concluded on December 20, 2021," IEBC said.
IEBC also announced that it will start will resume constituency-based continuous voter registration exercise. This is after it concluded the mass voter registration on Tuesday, November 2.
The electoral body said that the constituency-based voter registration exercise will run till a time a later date that it will find fit to conclude the exercise.
The constituency-based exercise will give room for Kenyans who did not register as voters to register as they look to take part in the next years General elections.
"The Commission will resume the constituency office-based Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and Revision of the Voter’s Roll upon conclusion of the ECVR. This will run until such a time that the Commission will publish a gazette notice suspending the CVR exercise," IEBC said.
The exercise comes a day after the IEBC said that it will not continue with the ongoing mass listing of voters countrywide.
Chebukati said that they would not extend the countrywide registration exercise since lacked the funds to do so.
In the concluded exercise, IEBC registered a total of 2,413,444 new voters out of its targeted six million eligible voters. The commission also registered 352,679 voters who applied for transfer from their current registration centres to other centres of choice.
