Justice William Ouko picked for Supreme Court Judge
The Judicial Service Commission has named Justice William Ouko as the successful candidate for the position of Supreme Court judge.
JSC Selection Chair Prof Olive Mugenda announced that Justice Ouko emerged the best for the post after deliberation upon the conclusion of the interview exercise.
"After careful consideration of the performance of the various candidates who were interviewed for the position of the judge of Supreme Court, the Commission has today recommended, for an appointment, Justice William Ouko as the Judge of the Supreme Court of Kenya and has submitted his name to his excellency the president for appointment," said Mugenda,
Justice Ouko now replaces Justice Jackton Ojwang who retired last year, that is if his nomination is considered.
The announcement comes hours after the conclusion of 3-days public interviews of the 7 candidates who had applied for the vacancy.
Justice Ouko edged six other candidates to emerge favourite.
The six candidates include Justice Chitembwe Said Juma, Justice Marete Njagi, Justice Nduma Nderi, Justice Lumumba Patrick, Justice Joseph Kiplagat and Justice Alice Jepkoech.
Prior to his nomination for Supreme Court Judge, Justice Ouko was the President of the Court of Appeal
Justice Ouko was born in November 1962.
He joined Judiciary in 1987 as the District Magistrate II rising ranks to become a Deputy Registrar of the High Court in 1989.
Later in 1997, he was promoted to serve as the first Chief Court Administrator of the Judiciary.
He became the Accounting Officer for the Judiciary after he was appointed to the position of Registrar of the High Court in 2002.
He was appointed as Judge of the High Court in 2004, and as Court of Appeal Judge, in 2012.
holds a Master of Arts degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice (MACJ), Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Kenya School of Law
