Legislators grill revenue body nominees, Gedi defends qualifications
The seven candidates nominated to serve as commissioners in the Commission for Revenue Allocation (CRA) were yesterday asked to explain the expertise that they would bring to the institution should their nomination be approved.
The candidates who appeared before MPs for vetting were questioned on their academic background, professional integrity, and qualifications as well as on issues touching on sharing of revenue between the national government and the devolved units.
Former Wajir Woman Rep Fatuma Gedi fought off claims that she had no qualifications for the position.
Committee on Finance and National Planning chaired by Molo MP Kuria Kimani said it had received two memoranda from members of the public questioning Gedi’s academic qualifications.

But Gedi said she has the right qualifications for the job, saying she possesses a diploma, higher diploma and degree from Gretsa University.
She also clarified that she had resigned from membership in the Jubilee Party’s Women’s League.
“There is no better person than an MP to hold this position. This CRA position is a political process. I have no doubt that I have the right experience running for 15 years to be a commissioner of CRA,” she said.
Gedi disclosed that she is worth Sh194 million, including a residential house in Karen worth Sh120 million, a house in Wajir worth Sh15 million, two pieces of land in Wajir worth Sh5 million each, 500 camels worth Sh10 million, 350 cows worth Sh14 million, 300 goats worth Sh12 million, five vehicles worth Sh20 million and cash worth Sh200 000.
House recalled
Other nominees are George Midiwo, Hadija Juma, Isabel Nyamburab, Jonas Kuko and Wilfred Koitamet.
Mutiso, Kuko, Nyambura and Juma were nominated by the Majority side while Gedi, Midiwo and Koitamet were nominated by the Minority side.
The committee is expected to table its report on Thursday morning ahead of the debate in the afternoon.
The National Assembly which went on a long recess on Thursday has been called for a special sitting to make a decision on the nominees.
The Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula in a gazette notice recalled the House for a special sitting to deliberate on among other things the CRA nominees.
