ODM MP arrested over assault allegations in Kisumu
Police are holding Kisumu Central MP Fred Ouda for interrogation over an alleged assault of a youth by his supporters at a hotel in Kisumu County.
County police commander Kipkirui Ngeno confirmed they had summoned the lawmaker and held him up for further interrogations.
This follows an incident in which some unruly youths allied to his opponent were injured when the MP checked in a hotel for lunch.
Once the lawmaker settled to order his lunch, a commotion ensued between his team and rival supporters allied to his main challenger in the constituency politics Joshua Oron, who they exchanged unkind words as they dared and went at each other.
Chairs, tables and other unquantified assets were destroyed during the chaos that erupted at the new popular restaurant known as Kalongolongo in Milimani estate.
"We are holding the lawmaker for breach of laws they make, alleged incitement and malicious damage to property," he said.
However, Oron who was at the restaurant during the incident, had not yet recorded a statement, but police have since summoned him.
Oron’s campaign manager Joash Nyaori sustained injuries on his face, head, ribs, eye and chin during the commotion.
Nyaori was rushed to Kisumu county referral hospital for treatment by good Samaritans alongside two other victims, including a woman who also injured in the scuffle.
Nyaori is the chief campaigner of Oron, who termed the act of political atrocities experienced as avoidable.
Oron on the other hand asked aspirants to respect each other and follow the stipulated law. He also asked them to be focused on issues as opposed to name-calling and character destruction.
Nyanza Regional Commander Karanja Muiruri said they will not tolerate any form of political violence in the region.
"Anybody involved in violence will face the full force of the law," he declared
Karanja called for peaceful campaigns as the country heads to the electioneering period.
