Relationship lessons from Kobe Bryants sudden d***h

NBA legend Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna ‘Gigi’ Bryant.

I woke up last Monday morning in shock as I read on social media the news of one of basketball’s all-time greats, Kobe Bryant’s death.

I’m not an ardent fan of basketball as I am of soccer, but our second son. But even if you are not a basketball fan, you must have heard of Kobe Bryant just as you heard of Magic Johnson and Mike Jordan.

Kobe together with his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna and seven other people perished in a helicopter crash in California. He was only 41.

What is surprising is that three months before his death, Kobe himself wrote a column in Newsweek magazine reflecting on what he had learned from the September 11 tragedy.

This is what he had to say, “I’ve learned that you can’t take things for granted. You know how we always say ‘See you later’?

One thing I’ve realised from September 11 is that you can’t ever say that for sure.

NBA legend Kobe Bryant.

Things change in the blink of an eye. People go to work and don’t come back. One minute they’re living and the next minute they’re not.

And, it doesn’t matter who you are, there is nothing you can do about it. We never know when our time here will be over, so we all need to make the most of every minute we have.”

I don’t know how Kobe lived his life after this great learning, but we can learn something from this and hopefully live it.

We can’t afford to take things for granted anymore, especially our spouses and our families and friends. We who are married so often take each other for granted.

We procrastinate spending time with our spice, postpone that date night, stay late another night at work or hang out one more time with the boys or girls.

Whatever good we can do for each other as a couple, and for each other as friends and family, let us do it now and not wait for “one day”, as that “one day” may never come.

So let’s make the most of every minute, every day, every week and every month.

If anything else, may the death of Kobe Bryant challenge us to live current and to enjoy life with your spouse whom you love, all the days of this meaningless life God has given you under the sun.
