The body of the 39-year-old Brazilian missionary who has been reported missing was found on Thursday morning in an abandoned car, about 10km from his work station.

Francisco Antonio Chages Barbosa was a missionary at Corner Stone Intercommunity Church Utawala, Nairobi county and had been reported missing on June 7 by his wife Franciane De Oliveira Barbosa, according to the police.

Motive of killing

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations but the motive of the killing is yet to be established.

His wife told the police that she could not trace her husband, adding that he never stayed out for long without communicating. She joined teams in searching for him in vain.

Police were later informed there was a burning car on the roadside in Mwihoko, about 10km away.

A team rushed to the scene of the fire and found a Nissan Wingroad on fire.

After the fire was put out by a team from Ruiru, the body of the missionary was found inside the boot of the car.

No arrest

The vehicle’s passenger seat was folded and the body had been burnt beyond recognition.

According to preliminary investigations, it is suspected he had been killed elsewhere and had been doused with fuel before the car was set on fire.

Teams of detectives revisited the scene on Thursday as part of the probe into the murder.

No arrest has been made so far, police said.

The missionary had left home to go and buy food but did not return, the last telephone conversation with his wife being at 4.03pm that day.

His silver Nissan Wingroad, registration number KBY 305D had on that night been seen being driven by some young men around 9pm.
