Brace for more rains and strong winds, warns Met

The ongoing rains pounding the country will continue until end of November, the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has said.

KMD Director Stella Aura says the rainfall intensity is likely to increase to more than 30mm in 24hrs during the forecast period (November 24 to November 30).

“The areas likely to be affected are Southeastern lowlands, the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Basin regions,” she said in a statement.

She added some parts of the Northeast and the Northwest are likely to experience strong winds of more than 25 knots (12.9m/s).

Residents of Nairobi, Central and parts of Eastern regions have been alerted to expect showers over several places tonight.

Highest daily rainfall

“Rains expected over few places in the morning breaking to sunny intervals. Showers expected over several places in the afternoon,” she added.

Nairobi has been experiencing rainfall in the last few days hence with the latest alert, warm clothing and planning daily activities is encouraged.

“In Western, Nyanza, Central and South Rift Valley regions, showers and thunderstorms are expected over several places tonight,” Aura said.

The same is expected in the North Eastern region, South Eastern Lowlands region and Coastal region.

According to Aura, Voi Meteorological Station recorded the highest seven-day total rainfall of 167.0mm while Kisumu came second with total rainfall of 100.mm

The same station also recorded the highest daily rainfall amount of 147.1mm on November 19, 2020.

On temperature review, comparing November 9-15 review period to November  16 – 22 , Aura noted that day-time maximum temperatures increased over most areas , although a few stations such as Makindu, Kitui and Voi recorded decreases.

“Night-time minimum temperatures decreased over some stations such as Laikipia, Eldoret, and Kitui and increased in Malindi and Kangema,” she said.

Lodwar Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature of 37.5°C on November 21, while Laikipia Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature of 7.5°C on  November 18.

  “The same stations recorded the highest seven-day average maximum temperatures of 36.7°C and the lowest seven-day average minimum temperatures of 9.7°C respectively,” she said.
