CCTV footage and co-operation among students helped detectives arrest seven students suspected to be behind the burning of a dormitory at Kimulot High School in Bomet county.

Officers behind the investigations told People Daily that even though the suspects had concealed their faces with shukas on the material day when the mission was executed, their colleagues were able to identify some of them.

Others were named by those who had been already arrested, said detectives privy to the investigations.

“Those whom we had arrested opened up and named their colleagues who they had planned together to commit the crime,” said the source.

The male students from various classes were nabbed on Monday by officers from Mogogosiek police station.

The students are believed to have sourced the petrol from a nearby filling station the previous evening.

Bomet county criminal investigations officer Johnstone Kola said their files were also forwarded to the office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice over their trial and are now scheduled to appear on February 3 for plea taking.

Property estimated to worth thousands of shillings was destroyed during the inferno which gutted a dormitory at the school.

Government officials closed down one of the largest public schools in Naivasha following another arson case.

During the early morning incident in Naivasha High School, property worth thousands of shillings was destroyed before the over 500 students were sent home.
