How Morans finally turned the screw on Boks
A new team spirit in the national rugby sevens team helped Kenya Morans emerge as the new Safari Sevens winners at the weekend after shocking South Africa’s Springboks 19-14 at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa grounds.
The second string side secured sweet revenge after the senior team lost to South Africa during the finals of the last Safari Sevens tournament and to crown it all, Kenya’s young talented winger Geoffrey Okwach tied with 2019 most valuable player and South Africa’s captain Siviwe Soyizwapi in tries and points scored.
“The painful loss to Springboks in our pool on day one compelled us to change our strategy because there is no way we were going to lose twice in two days to the same team.
We knew what was to be done and am happy every one put in extra effort to turn the tables of the South Africans,” Morans captain Jeff Oluoch told People Sport.
Morans win pleased Shujaa captain Andrew Amonde who is excited by the fact that Kenya now has two equally strong teams that can be rotated in the upcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualifiers in Johannesburg on the second weekend of November.
“Morans showed the world what Kenya is made up of and with two good teams and extra talented players in the reserve Kenya is without doubt headed for a good 2019/20 rugby sevens season,” Amonde said.
