IEBC issues statement on 2022 polls, says it’s ready to conduct elections

The Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (IEBC) has stated that it's ready to conduct the 2022 general elections.

IEBC made the statement following publications in various media outlets stating that the electoral body was not adequately funded to run 2022 polls.

"The commission's attention has been drawn to numerous public debates arising from media misreporting on 2022 General Elections preparedness and boundaries review," the IEBC statement read in part.

In it's Thursday, June 24 statement IEBC said it will not scrap the 26 protected constituencies as was reported in the news.

"The commission wishes to clarify that until boundaries review process is concluded, all the existing 290 constituencies remain as they are," the statement read.

IEBC further clarified that it is adequately funded to conducted the 2022 polls.

"The Commission's budgetary request for the 9 August, 2022 General Election was Ksh40.4 billion. However, the National Treasury's current budgetary allocation is Ksh26.5 billion for elections and boundaries review.

"In the financial year 2021/2022 the Commission has been allocated Ksh14.5 billion out of which Ksh4.5 billion is for current and capital expenditure leaving Ksh10 billion for elections and boundaries review," IEBC said.

The electoral body further stated that it will conclude the boundaries delimnination excercise within the legally provided timelines.

" The last Boundaries delamination exercise was conducted in 2012 and the Commission has up to March to under take and conclude the next review as the law provided for intervals between 8-12 years," IEBC said.
