Kajiado Assembly swears in persons with disabilities after wrangles and protests

Kajiado County Assembly has finally filled in the nominated Member of County Assembly (MCA) seat reserved for Persons living with disability (PWD).

Betty Taani allied to United Democratic Alliance (UDA) was sworn in Tuesday afternoon October 11, 2022, after she was verified to meet the required threshold and confirmed to be duly registered as a PWD.

During the swearing in of MCAs, the seat was left vacant after the nominee failed to submit the required documents to prove to be disabled.

The move attracted uproar and protest from PWDs living in Kajiado County who expressed fear of a planned skim to shortage them.

Agitated persons abled differently staged several demos protesting over the lack of representation in the third Assembly.

Kajiado PWDs chairperson Samson Tipape says the move is encouraging and a blessing.

"Finally it is a sign of relief to us, getting a representative in the crucial House is key in advancing our agenda. The majority of PWDs are no longer over-dependent, they are scholars," Tipape said.

A significant number of jubilant persons abled differently gathered at the Assembly to celebrate the move.

Taani was sworn in shortly before governor Joseph Ole Lenku's first address to the third Assembly.

Kajiado has 25 elected ward representatives and 16 nomination slots.

The nomination slots were reserved for women following the failure of women to clinch any seat through the competitive ballot procedure.
