March 6, 2024: Top news events to look out for today

Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today's happenings.

1. EALA session

The second session of the 5th assembly of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) continues today in Nairobi.

EALA's sessions in Nairobi began in earnest on March 3 and will run to March 20, 2024.

The 5th Assembly will deliberate on important regional matters, legislations proposed for harmonization, and strategies to bolster socio-economic development within the East African region.

Even though EALA is based in Arusha, Tanzania, it routinely holds some of its sessions in cities within its member states.

2. Measures against drug abuse

The government will on Wednesday announce far-reaching measures against the manufacture, distribution, sale and consumption of Illicit brews, drugs and substance abuse at the Deputy President's official residence in Karen, Nairobi.

3. 3rd EAC Regional Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) conference

The East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO) and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) will jointly host the 3rd EAC Regional Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) conference to be held in Nairobi between March 6 and 8, 2024.

The regional meeting will bring together policymakers, industry players, academicians, researchers, innovators, students, and development partners.

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu is expected to address the official opening of the conference.

4. NGAAF Strategic Plan launch

The National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) will launch its Strategic Plan 2023/2024 – 2027/2028 at the Kenya School of Government, Lower Kabete on Wednesday, March 6, 2024.

The Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage Aisha Jumwa Katana will attend the event accompanied by the Principal Secretary State Department for Gender and Affirmative Action Anne Wangombe and the 47 Women Representatives who serve as the patrons of the Fund.

The plan outlines the Fund's strategic goals, objectives, and activities for the next five years.

5. Power interruptions

Kenya Power has announced planned power interruptions for Wednesday, March 6, 2024.

The power interruptions will affect four counties including Siaya, Isiolo, Nyeri and Kiambu.

According to Kenya Power, Siaya areas that will be affected from 9 am to 5 pm include Onyinyore market, Gombe Mkt, Kambare Mkt, Nyalunya, Kadero, Sunrise, Riat Booster, Kadero village and adjacent customers.

In Isiolo County, the blackout will affect areas such as the Avia Mater Hospital, Isiolo District Hospital, the whole of Isiolo Town and adjacent customers from 8 am to 5 pm.

Parts of Nyeri county that will be affected from 9 am to 5 pm include; Miiri, Kiangai, Kiahiti, Kiaragana Kihuro, Thunguri, Kianwe, Gitundumo, Kaharo and adjacent customers.

Similarly, the blackout in Kiambu will affect part of Mugumo, Shooting Range, Rabat Road, Uganda Road, Chicago Road, Small Farm, Bwanji Farm and adjacent customers.
