Canadian-based Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna says he harbours no regrets after missing out on the race to succeed Noordin Haji as the next Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

The outspoken barrister was among 48 Kenyans who applied for the position following Haji's appointment as Director of National Intelligence Service (NIS) in June.

Miguna failed to meet the cut in a list of 15 Kenyans published by a seven-member selection panel chaired by Solicitor General Shadrack Mose.

The list went viral with netizens expressing different views about the recruitment process.

Reacting to the comments, Miguna said the news didn't come as a surprise to him, insisting that he was prepared for any outcome.

"I am aware that when you apply for something with others, you can get or not get what you sought," Miguna said in a tweet.

"So, not having been shortlisted or appointed for the position of DPP was part of the possible outcomes of my application, and I have no regrets for having applied."

In a separate tweet, Miguna dismissed claims that he was not qualified for the job.

"The minimum academic qualification was one law/university degree. I had 3. The second one was at least 15 years of legal practice or experience. I have 28 years of legal practice experience in good standing. The third were clearance certificates from HELB, DCI, EACC and a credit union. I had all of them. Plus 3 letters of recommendation from solid professionals," Miguna stated.

"I’m focused like a laser beam. Viva and cheers!" He added.

He further opined that he could have missed out on the shortlist because some members of the selection panel were afraid of him.

"I believe interviewing me for the job would have been impossible for some of the Panel Members. We march on, patriots," Miguna noted even as he rubbished claims that he lacks "soft skills".

Former electoral commissioner Thomas Letangule, and lawyers Taib Ali Taib and Danstan Omari are among those shortlisted for the plum job.

Other applicants who made the cut are Jacinta Nyamosi, Victor Mule, Tabitha Ouya, David Ruto, Francis Andayi, Winston Ngaira, Peter Mailanyi, Lilian Okumu, Jacob Ondari, James Ndegwa, David Okachi and Renson Ingonga.

Other notable personalities who missed the cut are lawyer criminal law lawyer Cliff Ombeta and advocates George Kithi and Vincent Mogire among others.

Interviews for the shortlisted candidates are slated for August 1 and 2, 2023.

Selection panel

Besides Mose, other members of the selection panel appointed by President William Ruto to recruit the new DPP are Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli and Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EAC) chief executive Twalib Mbarak.

Others are Mary Kimonye (Principal Administrative Secretary, State Department for Public Service), Shadrack Mose (Solicitor General), Mary Adhiambo (Secretary – HRM and Development, State Department for Public Service), Roseline Odede (Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights) and Richard Obwocha.
