MPs fine Petroleum CS John Munyes Ksh500,000 for snubbing summons
Petroleum Cabinet Secretary John Munyes has been fined Ksh500,000 by the Finance and National Planning Committee of the National Assembly for snubbing its summons.
The commitee, chaired by Homabay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga, had summoned Munyes who was a no-show.
The committee agreed to fine the CS Ksh500,000 for snubbing the continuous summons.
Munyes failed to appear before the committee and sent a letter saying that he was in South Sudan attending other issues which were still official.
The committee was scheduled to table its recommendations on October 5, 2021 but was added a week to make conclusions on the probe.
The committee stated that it has become hard to make any recommendations since the CS has never honored the summons.
According to Wanga, Munyes should explain to the committee why fuel prices in the country have been shooting up every new month.
In September, the price of fuel went up by Ksh9 sparking an uproar across the country.
“Already, we had asked the Clerk of the committee to issue a summon to the CS to appear before the committee. The matter before us is of national interest and all too important we cannot afford to reschedule any further,” Wanga said.
The committee had summoned Munyes and his Principal Secretary Andrew Kamau but they never turned up.
The Committee Vice-Chairman Waihenya Ndirangu also said that they had agreed not to give the duo any more time.
He said that they will not keep on postponing their business to a later date, as it only raises eyebrows that they were working in cohorts with the cartels.
“Unless they are also in conspiracy with the people misappropriating demurrage charges in the oil jetty. I don’t understand why they are not here, they are totally out of order,” Ndirangu said.
