Senate speaker Amason Kingi has convened a special sitting to determine the fate of besieged Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza on Friday, December 30.

Mwangaza was impeached after just 112 days in office with all MCAs present at the assembly voting unanimously to have the first-term governor removed from office.

She is accused of alleged gross misconduct, abuse of office and gross violation of the Constitution and county laws. Sixty-seven out of 69 MCAs voted to impeach the governor.

In a gazette notice, Kingi stated that the sitting shall be held in the senate chamber at the main parliament buildings, ground floor from 2.30 pm.

"Notice is given to all Senators that pursuant to Standing Order 33 (1) of the Senate Standing Orders, on the request of the Senate Majority Leader and with the support of the requisite number of Senators, I have appointed Friday, 30th December 2022, as a day for a special sitting of the Senate. The sitting shall be held in the Senate Chamber, Main Parliament Buildings, Ground Floor, Nairobi, commencing at 2.30 p.m," the gazette notice reads in parts.

The business to be transacted will be the consideration of the special committee's report on the proposed removal of Mwangaza from office by impeachment.

Chaired by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, if the committee upholds the proposed impeachment, Mwangaza ceases to hold office and vice versa.

Another business that will be transacted during the special sitting will be the swearing-in of David Wokali Wafula the senator-elect for Bungoma county.

"In accordance with standing order 33(5) of the senate standing orders, the business specified in this notice shall be the only business before the senate during the special sitting, following which, the senate shall stand adjourned until Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 2.30 pm when the senate shall continue with its regular sessions in accordance with the senate calendar," the notice added.
